After taking a 75 place grid penalty in the Belgian Grand Prix due to the replacement of several power units and components, starting at the very back of the grid as a result, McLaren driver Fernando Alonso is in a similar position for this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix with a 30 place grid drop before he even gets in the car!

Due to the fact that Honda wish to trial their new upgraded engine ahead of their home race next weekend in japan, Alonso will be trailing the upgraded bits over the course of this weekend. The new engine will be used in FP1 tomorrow, however a decision won’t be taken on whether to keep using it until after the session ends.

Alonso has been on a solid points run since returning from the summer break and he is hoping that his pre-determined place at the back of the grid won’t prevent him from continuing this fine run of form….

“We had a plan at the middle of the season of which would be the best traces where to pay the penalty and this was one of the best because the conditions normally change," Alonso told Sky Sports. "The aim for us is to be in the points at every race until the end of the season,. For me, this will be more difficult because l am starting last but points are still the target. Being the fourth-quickest car remains the target."

Teammate Jenson Button will not be using the new upgraded unit so will not incur a penalty.
